Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP) is one of the easiest and most relaxing ways to enjoy Lake Zurich. Using a large, stable board and paddle, you can explore the water at your own pace — whether standing, kneeling, or sitting. Here's a few of our favourite spots to take a Stand Up Paddle Board in Zurich.
Zürichhorn is one of the best places for Stand Up Paddle boarding on Lake Zurich. With calm water, beautiful lake views, and plenty of space to paddle, it’s perfect for both beginners and experienced paddlers.
One of the biggest advantages of Zürichhorn is how easy it is to get in and out of the water. The gentle lakeside access and open shoreline make launching your SUP simple and stress-free — especially if it’s your first time paddling.
From the water, you can enjoy views of the Chinagarten, the Zurich skyline, sailboats, swimming areas, and on clear days even the distant Alps. Whether you want a relaxing paddle or an active day outdoors, Zürichhorn is one of the most scenic and beginner-friendly SUP spots in Zurich.

Just around the corner from Zürichhorn, the area near Chinagarten is one of the most popular summer hangouts on Lake Zurich.
The water here is usually very calm, especially around the small boats and sheltered shoreline, making it a perfect spot to relax on your SUP. It’s a great place to take a break, float on the water, and soak up the atmosphere while people enjoy the lakeside parks, swimming areas, and summer vibes all around you.
With beautiful scenery, calm conditions, and plenty happening along the shore, this part of the lake is ideal for a laid-back paddle session in Zurich.
For a longer and more peaceful SUP route, paddle along the shoreline past Tiefenbrunnen and continue toward Zollikon. As you leave the busier parts of the lake behind, the atmosphere becomes quieter and more relaxed, with calm water and beautiful views along the coast.
One of the best spots to pause is just before the Zollikon ferry stop, where you’ll find a super peaceful stretch of water in front of the elegant lakeside villas. It’s the perfect place to chill on your board, enjoy the scenery, and take in a slower side of Lake Zurich away from the city crowds.

During the warm summer months, conditions at Lake Zurich are usually great for paddle boarding, especially when winds are light. You must not enter designated swimming areas. These are clearly marked by large yellow floating buoys in the water and are reserved for swimmers' safety. When paddling, always keep an eye out for other water users, especially passenger ferries and larger boats. These vessels have limited ability to change course and always have priority.
Never get in their way. If you see a ferry or boat approaching, move away early and give it plenty of space. By staying outside swimming zones and keeping a safe distance from boats, everyone can enjoy the lake safely.

If you feel unstable at first, begin on your knees. It helps you find balance before standing up.
When you’re ready to standing up, rise one foot at a time and keep your knees slightly bent to stay stable.
You MUST NOT enter designated swimming areas from the city of Zurich. These are clearly marked by large yellow floating buoys in the water.
Power comes from your body, not just your arms. Engage your core for smoother, longer paddles.
Especially as a beginner, paddling near Zürichhorn or the shoreline keeps conditions calmer and safer. If you choose to go 300m away from the shoreline, you must wear the lifejacket provided.
Always be aware of ferries on Lake Zurich, you can predict their course and keep clear of their route by paddling away before they get close. The Zürichhorn ferry stop should be avoided completely.
Clouds are fine, but wind can be a problem (especially above ~25 km/h), stay closer to shore or reschedule.
Use a dry bag for phone, water, or small items — and avoid bringing valuables you don’t need.
It will sink if you’re not paying attention, so it’s best to keep it within reach at all times while on the water.
SUP is not a race — stop, float, relax, and enjoy one of the most beautiful city lakes in the world.
Stand Up Paddle boarding on Lake Zurich is generally easy and stress free, but it is still regulated for safety.
- A life jacket (or buoyancy aid) is required outside the near-shore area (300m) and on rivers, and is strongly recommended at all times.
- SUP users must give way to large vessels such as ferries, cargo ships, and sailboats, and always avoid shipping lanes, harbour entrances, and restricted zones.
- You must stay clear of marked swimming areas, nature reserves, and other protected zones.
- In low visibility (fog, night, or dusk), a white all-round light is required to remain visible on the water.
- SUP boards don’t need registration, but they must be clearly labelled with the owner’s name and contact details.
- Weather warnings are shown via orange flashing lights on the shore:Slow flashing = strong wind warning (stay close to shore)Fast flashing = storm warning (leave the water immediately)
- Always check conditions before heading out, and stay close to shore if you are unsure.
